Styphnolobium japonicum

The honey tree owes its Dutch name to the many fragrant, creamy-white flowers that appear in late summer. They are full of nectar and are therefore often visited by honeybees.

Baby

Here I am! Your own baby pagoda tree. I hope you will take good care of me. Put me in a bright spot in the house and give me a little water every other day.

After 2 weeks

After 2 weeks of pampering, it’s time for a larger home! Preferably a pot of 2 litres or more, with holes at the bottom (so I don’t ‘drown’).

Outside

You can put me outside now. Just let me get used to the bright sun in partial shade for a week. I can handle the cold well, but if I’ve just started growing new leaves, I like to hide in a cool place in the house when temperatures go below -5°C.

Teenager

What you nurture will grow. Just like the average teenager I can go through a big growth spurt! Once I am twice the height of my pot, it is time to give my roots a little more space.

Fertilizer & temperature

In the summer I like to be outside in a sunny place or in partial shade. When I develop new leaves I get hungry and I will be very grateful for a little extra plant food!

At temperatures below -15 °C I like to hide in a cool place in the house. After 2 years in a pot you can also plant me in the ground.

Open ground

To really ‘flourish’ I like to stand in the open ground. Here I can grow quickly with up to 1 m per year, until I am about 20 metres tall! A large pot is also possible, then I stay smaller.

I like sun and space. Frost to -25°C is no longer a problem, but sometimes a branch dies in winter. If you prune me in the spring, I’ll look neat again.
